This record provides an overview of the scope of the NESP Marine Biodiversity Hub project "Identification of near-shore habitats of juvenile white sharks in south-western Australia". No data outputs were generated by this project. -------------------- In 2018, CSIRO provided the first estimate of adult abundance for the southern-western Australian white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) population. At the time, total population abundance could not be estimated because of limited information on the juvenile life-history stage. This project investigated whether juvenile white sharks from this population use near-shore habitats near the head of the Great Australian Bight. It investigated credible anecdotal evidence of juvenile white shark presence in the region and was designed as a pilot study to inform future survey and project development. The project reviewed existing sources of evidence and undertook unmanned aerial vehicle (AUV) surveys in near-shore habitats within and around the Nuyts Archipelago Marine Park. Thirty-five UAV flights were completed during 2018 and 2019, covering approximately 7.5 km². No white sharks were identified in the UAV footage, although several other marine species and shorebirds were observed. Additional evidence from scientific surveys indicated that the Head of Bight and surrounding marine park areas may be important habitat for white sharks across multiple life stages. The project included engagement with the Yalata Land Management Indigenous Ranger team, who were consulted during project planning and survey activities. The findings informed future project development by assessing the value of further on-water activities, expanded UAV surveys and targeted monitoring in the Great Australian Bight region.

White sharks are listed as vulnerable under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and actions to assist their recovery and long-term viability are prescribed in a national recovery plan for the species. A priority action is to develop an effective means of estimating the size of white shark populations and monitor their status (population trend). This would provide a scientific basis for assessing recovery actions, and for local policies governing human-shark interactions: an issue of significant public concern. NESP Project A3 provides a national assessment of the southern-western adult white shark population abundance and an update of the total eastern Australasian white shark population abundance and status in order to establish the efficacy of existing recovery actions and provide a scientifically sound and rational basis from which to inform policies that aim to balance conservation objectives and public safety. This record describes the individual DNA sequencing of over 500 animals for CK-MR analyses of SA/WA population tissue samples.

This record provides an overview of the NESP Marine and Coastal Hub project "Updating knowledge of Australian white sharks". For specific data outputs from this project, please see child records associated with this metadata. -------------------- The white shark is listed as Vulnerable and Migratory under Australia’s Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act 1999. Previous NESP-funded research provided updated estimates of breeding population size and trend, but uncertainty remained around juvenile nursery and pupping areas, movement patterns, and connectivity between eastern and south-western Australian populations. More recent evidence has also raised the possibility of a single Australian population. This project aimed to reduce uncertainty in the status, trends and population structure of white sharks in Australian waters, with a focus on identifying biologically important habitats and improving population assessment through expanded close-kin mark-recapture (CKMR) analyses. The project combined three major components: (1) pilot tagging studies of large adult females and juvenile sharks to improve understanding of movements, pupping areas and habitat use; (2) genetic analyses to assess stock structure and connectivity using samples collected across Australia, and where possible from South Africa and New Zealand; and (3) updated population assessment using expanded tissue sample collections and close-kin mark-recapture methods. Population estimates incorporated approximately 1,000 tissue samples from New South Wales together with additional samples from South Australia and Western Australia. Juvenile abundance information from the New South Wales shark management program was also integrated into the assessment framework. CKMR approaches used genetic identification of parent-offspring and half-sibling relationships to estimate adult abundance, survival and population trends. Project outputs included updated estimates of population size and trend, improved understanding of population connectivity and movement patterns, and refined information on potential nursery and critical habitat areas. These findings support white shark recovery planning, future monitoring design, and conservation assessment in Commonwealth and state waters.
