- The continuation of Australian Fisheries Healthcheck has been supported by the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC) on behalf of the Australian Government (Project 2023-024) and the DAFF Ag Traceability Uplift – Responsible fisheries – Activating a comprehensive Ecological, Social, and Governance (ESG) reporting data system to uplift sustainability traceability. The project ran from 2023-2026.

- Statement
- Step 1: Search for reports and other sources of data regarding workforce, labour force, and fleet characteristics of the fishery. Step 2: Investigate the reports and other sources of data for information on the following workforce condition risk variables: - Migrant workers (i.e., employees working in the fishery as 482 and 457 visa holders). If worker visa status data are available and there are migrant workers, assign a score of 1. If data are available and there are no migrant workers, assign a score of 0. - Employees and sole operators working under casual employment arrangements. If employment arrangement type data are available and there are casual arrangements, assign a score of 1. If data are available and there are no casual arrangements, assign a score of 0. - Leasee fishing vessel operators operating in the fishery (i.e., vessel skippers working as authorised supervisors rather than holders of the fishing entitlement). If vessel skipper lease data are available and any skippers are found to be operating as authorised supervisors, assign a score of 1. If data are available and all skippers are found to be holders of the fishing entitlement, assign a score of 0. - Workers for whom English is a second language. If data regarding native English speakers are available and any workers are found to speak English as a second language, assign a score of 1. If data are available and all workers are native English speakers, assign a score of 0. - Fishing trips lasting 5 or more consecutive days at sea. If data regarding length of fishing trips are available and there are fishing trips lasting 5 or more consecutive days at sea, assign a score of 1. If fishing trip length data are available and all trips last 4 or fewer consecutive days, assign a score of 0. - Fishing trips in remote waters (i.e. 50 or more nautical miles from any port facilities). If fishing trip location data are available and any trips are found to occur 50 or more nautical miles away from any port facilities, assign a score of 1. If fishing trip location data are available an all trips occur within 50 nautical miles of any port facilities, assign a score of 0. If data are not found for any of the risk variables above, those risk variables cannot be assessed. If all risk variables could not be assessed, report "Data not found" and the year of data collection for the framework. Step 3: Sum the scores assigned. The final score of workforce conditions contributing to potential modern slavery risk is to be presented as a fraction: [Total score]/[Number of risk variables able to be assessed] Step 4: Report the modern slavery risk score as a fraction (x/y) and the year of data collection for the framework. Note: Some elements of this composite score may need to be manually obtained.
