Abundance estimates of sea urchins and a suite of predators over multiple spatial scales.

Underwater visual census surveys were conducted at 15 sites in eastern Tasmania to quantify the abundance of the sea urchin Heliocidaris erythrogramma and several putative predators.

Statement
Data ranges from Bicheno to the Mercury Passage and the Derwent Estuary and incorporates three MPAs and adjacent reference sites. Sea urchin abundance and size structure were recorded in diver placed quadrats (16m^2) and predator abundance quantified on 10 x 50m belt transects at each site. Demersal fish were surveyed by recording the number of each species found within 5m either side of the transect. Decapod species Plagusia chabrus (red bait crab) and Jasus edwardsii (southern rock lobster) were counted in a 2m strip either side of the 50m transect. The abundance of lobsters were split further into three size classes.
