Fauna of rock platforms on the east coast of Tasmania and Flinders Island
Rock Platforms on Tasmania's east coast, Flinders Island, and the north coast as far west as Port Sorell, were surveyed between December 1995 and September 1996. At each of 51 sites two transects were sampled using quadrats. All animals and plants were counted, or in the case of sessile species, their cover was estimated.

- At each site, two parallel transect lines were set out, approximately 150 m apart and running at right angles to the water line from the upper edge of the Durvillea potatorum (or equivalent) belt to the lichen band (Caloplaca spp. or equivalent) at the top of the shore. Two 30 x 30 cm quadrats were sampled at 2 m intervals along each transect. All species found within the quadrats were recorded, and the percentage cover of encrusting or sessile species was estimated, while individuals of all other species were counted. Most species could be identified in situ, but unusual or unidentifiable specimens were preserved in 70% ethanol and returned to the laboratory for identification. Each site was sampled once, during daylight hours when the low tide level was 0.8 m or lower. Rock platforms with boulders, crevices and pools were avoided when choosing sites for transects. To sample these habitats, the areas adjacent to the transects were examined and species not found in the quadrats were recorded and their abundance scored on an arbitrary 0 - 3 scales. Pools were sampled with a small hand net and the species abundance scored on a similar scale. The same approach (quadrats and off-transects observations) was used to sample macro-algae. Percentage cover was recorded in the quadrats, and the 0-3 scale was used elsewhere. A number of physical characteristics were recorded at each site. The shore profile was sketched and the slope of the shore estimated by eye. The gross geology was recorded in one of five categories (dolerite, granite, sandstone, siltstone/mudstone, and micaceous slate). The degree of exposure was estimated on scale of 1-5 from observations of wave action and the extent of the splash zone. Any birds present were recorded, together with the type and degree of disturbance (pollution, trampling, runoff, food/bait collection).
