Management options to minimise formation of urchin barrens: measuring changes in marked incipient barren patches

A photographic and in situ diver survey of marked incipient Centrostephanus rodgersii barren patches, in eastern Tasmanian, was used to assess any changes in the grazed area and shape at experimental (lobster translocation/ research reserve protection sites; and abalone diver urchin cull sites) versus control sites.

Statement
Photographs of marked incipient Centrostephanus rodgersii barren patches were used to assess any changes in the grazed area and shape. For this reason it was important that all the photos were comparable in space and the incipient patch is complete, photographed in focus and taken in good water visibility. Before taking the photo, a metallic quadrat of 1m x 1m was placed in the middle of the patch, in a standard location for each time period. The photo was taken vertically on top of the incipient barren with the long axis of the photo parallel to the coast line. It was important to capture the total area of the patch and the habitat surrounds. Ideally the photo would be taken from the surface but this was dependent on visibility (minimum height 3m from reef surface). Sometimes several photos were necessary to cover the total extent of the patch. If a wide-angle lens was used, correction was applied so the image was planar, using PTLens distortion correction software. Photos were analysed using ImageJ software. Parameters measured include - patch depth. - estimated grazed area (m^2): total grazed area in square metres (using 1 x 1 m quadrat as a guide) estimated by the diver in situ following the contours of the bottom. - estimated planar area (m^2): grazed area visible for the diver from 3 metres vertically above the bottom in a 2 dimensional plane (using 1 x 1 m quadrat as a guide). - patch sketch: a simple sketch of the shape of the patch marking the quadrat position on it. - Number of C. rodgersii: divided in large and small (small <70 mm test diameter, large >70 mm test diameter). These numbers are subdivided into cryptic (in crevices with less than 90ยบ aperture) and exposed classes. - Number of H. erythrogramma: as above.
