Macquarie Harbour dissolved oxygen and temperature monitoring data from HOBO loggers (2017-2018)
Sustainable finfish aquaculture is dependent on a benthic environment that can assimilate and process farm particulate wastes. In Macquarie Harbour, bottom and mid water Dissolved Oxygen levels have reached very low levels, which is associated with an increase in the presence of bacterial mats and a significant decline in the abundance and diversity of benthic fauna. Dissolved Oxygen levels are a major determinant of the response of benthic communities in the harbour over timescales of months to years.
This dataset consist of dissolved oxygen (DO) and temperature data collected using HOBO Dissolved Oxygen loggers (U26-001) deployed at two locations in Macquarie Harbour, Tasmania under FRDC project 2016-067.

- Statement
- Data was collected using HOBO Dissolved Oxygen loggers (U26-001), which measure DO and temperature, attached to vertical strings in 5 m intervals. Loggers use optical DO sensors that measure partial pressure and convert values to concentrations in mg/l assuming constant salinity. Data was converted back to % saturation after download to match other DO monitoring datasets for Macquarie Harbour and avoid inaccuracies due to varying salinities. Pre-deployment 0 % calibration checks resulted in readings ranging from 0.01 - 0.08 mg/l (Mean=0.043, SD=0.025), the manufacturer supplied sensor accuracy is 0.2 mg/l and sensor resolution is 0.02 mg/l. Temperature accuracy is 0.2 °C and temperature resolution is 0.02 °C. Sensors were cleaned and recalibrated every 3 months and sensor caps replaced every 6 months. Depth values are approximate deployment depths (not directly measured depths) and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 0.5 m. Logger data of this nature naturally has occasional spikes and significant outliers should be examined and removed prior to analysis. By using this data you acknowledge that you understand these limitations.
