Storm Bay water quality monitoring
The Storm Bay water quality dataset brings together observations collected through FRDC Project 2018-131: Storm Bay Observing System: Assessing the Performance of Aquaculture Development and FRDC Project 2014-031: Predicting marine currents, nutrients and plankton in the coastal waters of south eastern Tasmania in response to changing weather patterns.
Together, these projects established a long-term monitoring record for Storm Bay, coinciding with the expansion of the Tasmanian salmonid industry in the region. The resulting time series improves understanding of baseline environmental conditions and supports ongoing assessment of the environmental performance of aquaculture activities in Storm Bay.
The data presented here comprise monthly observations of physical, biological and nutrient parameters from long-term Storm Bay monitoring sites associated with the Broadscale Environmental Monitoring Program (BEMP).

Resource lineage
- Statement
- Nutrient concentrations were measured from water samples collected in niskin bottles deployed at three depths. These were just below the surface (surface), 10 metres (middle), and 1 metre above the seabed (bottom). Dissolved nutrients were measured from samples filtered through a 0.2 µM PES filter. Chlorophyll samples were measured from 12 metre integrated water column samples collected using a Lund tube. Physical water quality parameters were measured using a Seabird CTD deployed through the entire water column. Surface, middle and bottom observations were extracted by matching their depth to the corresponding nutrient samples.
