AUSTEn Moorings and CTD Casts (Banks and Clarence Strait)
The AUStralian Tidal Energy (AUSTEn) project was a three year project (2018 - 2020) funded by the Australian Renewable Energy National Agency (agreement number G00902) led by the Australian Maritime College (University of Tasmania), in partnership with CSIRO and University of Queensland. The project had a strong industry support (Atlantis Resources Limited, MAKO Tidal Turbines Ltd, Spiral Energy Corporation Ltd). The aim of the project was to assess the technical and economic feasibility of tidal energy in Australia, based on the best understanding of resource achievable. For further information and output of the project, please visit the AUSTEn project website www.austen.org.au.

- Statement
- Seven field campaigns were conducted: four in Banks Strait, Tasmania, Australia; and three in Clarence Strait, Northern Territory, Australia: Banks Strait - Campaign A1 (13-3-2018 to 29-3-2018), - Campaign A2 (9-7-2018 to 13-7-2018), - Campaign A3 (6-12-2018 to 12-12-2018), and - Campaign A4 (15-2-2019 to 16-2-2019). Clarence Strait - Campaign B1 (21-05-2019 to 26-05-2019), - Campaign B2 (18-09-2019 to 21-09-2019), and - Campaign B3 (03-01-2020 to 05-01-2020). CTD casts (profiles) were taken with two RBR CTDs: Maestro Generation 3 and Concerto Generation 2. The Concerto CTD was equipped with a turbidity sensor. The CTD units were lowered down in multiple configurations: strapped to the acoustic release used to deploy ADCP moorings or simply attached to a rope an a weight to ensure a profile as vertical as possible. GPS positions were recorded using a Garmin hand held GPS and confirmed by the vessel's GPS. ADCPs were deployed on tripod moorings equipped with acoustic releases and pop up buoys for further retrieval. ADCPs were configured to measure currents and waves. The moorings were deployed using an acoustic release, dropped with care on the seabed during slack tide. Retrieval was also performed during slack tide. Deployment of temperature sensors on a mooring with surface buoy (rope from a weight on the seabed to a surface float). Deployment was done by dropping the surface float in the water, then letting the rope go and finally pushing the weight off the back of the vessel. GPS positions were recorded using a Garmin hand held GPS and confirmed by the vessel's GPS.
