Surveys of sea urchins (Centrostephanus rodgersii and Heliocidaris erythrogramma) and associated barrens habitat, Kent Group, Tasmania 1974, 1981
Quantitative surveys were undertaken at five sites in the Kent Group, north eastern Tasmania (Murray Pass, Winter Cove, Little Squally Cove, and southern end of Erith Island) by divers using underwater visual census methods to survey the reef habitat. Additional spot dive surveys were undertaken at northern side of East Cove, Garden Cove, Winter Cove, Squally Cove (Deal Island), northern and southern sides of West Cove (Erith Island) and north east and north west coasts of Dover Island.
Divers recorded numbers of sea urchins (Centrostephanus rodgersii and Heliocidaris erythrogramma), as well as extent of urchin barrens, size of algal patches, and measured boundaries of macroalgal patches of Macrocystis angustifolia, Phyllospora comosa and Ecklonia radiata-fucoid communities. Spot dives detailed additional qualitative observations of C. rodgersii.

- Statement
- Echinoid counts were undertaken at East Cove in May 1974 and March 1981 using dive survey methods. The diver swam along 3 straight-line transects perpendicular to the shore and along curved transects parallel to the shore at fixed depths of 5, 10 and 15 m. On perpendicular transects, the diver swam down the slope to the seaward edge of the reef and returned to shore along a parallel line (at 5m distance from outward line). The fixed depth transects were ca. 350 m long. On each transect swim, the number of sea urchins (C. rodgersii and H. erythrogramma) were recorded within 1 m of the line for each 2 minute interval of swimming time. Divers recorded extent of urchin barrens, size of algal patches (within barrens), and boundaries of macroalgal patches of M. angustifolia, P. comosa and E. radiata - fucoid communities were measured. Data from timed swims were converted to density estimates using the calibration of swimming speed applied in abalone studies (Johnson et al., 2005, Shepherd, 1985). Data were recorded on a map and contours constructed from this. Maps were digitised and mean densities calculated (by integration with contour bands). Additional spot dives where qualitative observations on C. rodgersii were made were conducted in the Kent Group (1974: Deal Island, sites, Erith Island - 1 site; 1981: Deal Island - 4 sites, Erith Island - 2 sites, and Dover Island - 2 sites). For these, divers recorded C. rodgersii along straight-line transects perpendicular to the shore from ca. 2 m to the sand-edge of the reef. Barrens type (Type I, under and overstorey both removed; and Type II, understorey removed, but overstorey of E. radiata/ other large fucoids largely intact).
