Dive surveys of long spined sea urchin (Centrostephanus rodgersii) and barrens habitat, Tasmania

The spatial extent of the long spined sea urchin, Centrostephanus rodgersii, was estimated by divers using underwater visual census methods to survey rocky reef habitats at 13 regions along Tasmania's east coast (between Eddystone Point and Recherche Bay). Within each region 3 subsites were surveyed, and within each subsite 4 belt transects were surveyed.

Divers recorded depth, percent substrata type, percent C. rodgersii barrens habitat; abundance of urchins (C. rodgersii and H. erythrogramma), rock lobster (J. edwardsii) and abalone (H. rubra). Divers also recorded algal cover (estimated), C. rodgersii barrens and substratum type using set categories (see below).

Purpose
To determine the distribution of the long spined sea urchin (Centrostephanus rodgersii) on the east coast of Tasmania, to estimate the cover of C. rodgersii barrens on the east coast, and to compare the standing stocks of commercially harvested black lip abalone (Haliotis rubra) and southern rock lobster (Jasus edwardsii) in barrens habitat with that of adjacent seaweed beds.

Statement
Within each of the 13 regions, 3 subsites were surveyed, and within each subsite 4 belt transects were set perpendicular to the shore spanning 3-18 m in depth (with transect length a maximum of 100 m). For each 5 x 1m section along both sides of the transect line divers recorded depth, percent substrata type, percent C. rodgersii barrens habitat; abundance of urchins (C. rodgersii and H. erythrogramma), rock lobster (J. edwardsii) and abalone (H. rubra). Algal cover (percent per species or guild) was also estimated to the nearest 5% for each 5 x 1 m section for both sides of the transect line. Divers classified habitat as C. rodgersii barrens when foliose macroalgae was lacking and locally abundant C. rodgersii individuals were present. Areas of grazed substratum could be discerned unambiguously. The substratum was classified either as flat rock shelves, very large boulders, large boulders, small boulders, cobble, pebble, gravel, or sand. Transect position was recorded using a GPS point for the start and finish of each transect.
