Management options to minimise formation of urchin barrens: using belt transect surveys to monitor benthic community structure

Belt transect surveys (50m) were used to monitor the benthic community structure through time at experimental (lobster additions/ research reserve sites or abalone diver urchin culls) and control sites in eastern Tasmania. Measures of percentage cover of key algal guilds, percentage of reef grazed by sea urchins, number of sea urchins (Centrostephanus rodgersii, Heliocidaris erythrogramma), Abalone (Haliotis Rubra), Rock lobsters (Jasus edwardsii) and type of substratum were recorded.

Statement
50 metre belt transects were used to monitor benthic community structure through time at impacted and control sites in eastern Tasmania. All the transect positions are approximately the same across sampling periods, these positions were recorded with a GPS. The transects were deployed from a boat following a depth contour, i.e. along shore transects. Two divers were deployed into the water at one end of the transect. The transect line was marked every 5 m. The divers swam along the line transect surveying a corridor of 1 metre width (2 metres width to assess Rock lobsters density). Data was recorded every 5 metres; every organism with more than half of the body inside the area was recorded. Every 5 metre segment of the transect was swam twice, first close to the bottom counting sea urchin, abalone, lobsters and general understory coverage, and second about 2 metres from the seabed to assess total percentage cover of kelp, barren, and substratum type (i.e. size-grading of rock types).
