Darwin Harbour marine habitats
This data was collected to improve our knowledge and understanding of the marine environment in the upper reaches of East and Middle Arms (Darwin Harbour), to assist planning and sustainable development for the new township.
Data provide polygon data that map the benthic habitats (12 physical and biological categories) in the upper reaches of the harbour using remote-sensed and survey data.
This dataset is being continually updated and is current as of 03/03/2016.

- Statement
- The mapping method used primary (e.g. sediment type, depth) and secondary data sets (derived from bathymetry) that describe seascape complexity and characteristics of the seabed. Boosted Regression Tree Models were used to model species relationships with physical environmental and seascape characteristics and GIS interpolation tools were used to create habitat maps for the estuarine environment in East and Middle Arms (Darwin Harbour). The physical habitat map has raster numbers 1-15 representing 12 classes: 1 Subtidal, non-mobile, below PS zone, rough 2 Subtidal, non-mobile, below PS zone, smooth 3 Subtidal, non-mobile, PS zone, rough 4 Subtidal, non-mobile, PS zone, smooth 5 Low Intertidal, non-mobile, rough 7 Low Intertidal, non-mobile, smooth 9 Intertidal, non-mobile substrates 11 Subtidal, mobile, below PS zone, rough 12 Subtidal, mobile, below PS zone, smooth 13 Subtidal, mobile, PS zone, rough 14 Subtidal, mobile, PS zone, smooth 15 Intertidal mobile substrates The community map has raster numbers 1-15 representing the following communities: 1 High Density Filter feeders (Sponges & Soft Corals) 2 Medium Density Filter feeders (Sponges & Soft Corals) 3 High Density Mixed community (Corals, Alage, Sponges & Soft Corals) 4 Medium Density Mixed community (Corals, Alage, Sponges & Soft Corals) 5 Low-Medium Density Mixed community (Corals, Alage, Sponges & Soft Corals) 7 Low Density Mixed community (Corals, Alage, Sponges & Soft Corals) 9 Bare Rocky reef 11 Bare coarse sediment with possibility small rocky outcrops / rippled sand 12 Bare sandy to mixed sediments 13 Bare coarse sediment rippled sand 14 Bare substrate 15 bare sand - mud (either flats/bars)
